As with the objects on the race track the terrain too is built keeping in mind the accuracy and 1:1 ratio of the real world using the provided laser scan. Terrain usually covers about 15-20km surface area with the race track in the center of it. The entire terrain is built in about 20,000 polys and is divided into 15-20 smaller tile-like chunks and each chunk textured on its own 1024x1024 map.

 

Terrain details like lakes, roadways, grass patches and shrubs are all etched out on the mesh and details are further ramped up on the surfaces closer to the track. Roadways, skid marks, oil spills are all hand painted on the texture to give close to real feel.
